Water Is Life!

Water intake is a huge factor when it comes to our health & vitality. We are approximately 65-75% made of water with blood being 92% water, bones being 22% water & muscles being 75% made of water.

It is the vital ingredient that our systems need to function at their best & affects everything from brain & organ function to temperature regulation. Water is life & next to oxygen is the most important thing that we as human beings consume to thrive & grow.

Dehydration & it’s effect on the body.

In terms of exercise if we are not getting enough then muscle performance & growth is inhibited. Without enough water toxins cannot be expelled from the body causing them to be pushed & stored in fat cells. The body cannot release these fat cells until it is hydrated enough to get rid of these toxins.

It has also found that the body enters a fat burning state more readily when fully hydrated.

More importantly than adverse fitness effects, dehydration is directly linked to fatigue, asthma & allergies, high blood pressure, skin disorders, high cholesterol, digestive issues, bladder & kidney problems, constipation, joint stiffness & premature ageing.

You also burn more calories when properly hydrated due to an elevated metabolism; Researchers estimate that a person who drinks 1.5 litres more water a day over a year year will burn an extra 17000 calories a year constituting 5 pounds.

Water before meals also can help us feel full & control portion sizes – Did you know that a lot of the time when you are hungry you are actually thirsty as the body provokes the same response?

Dehydration can be contributing to a bad back!

  • The disks of the spine have a gel like nucleus with a tough ring exterior that keeps the integrity of the disk. In a disk herniation the nucleus usually migrates to the posterior (back) right or left & can end up touching or impinging on the nerve which can result in pain travelling down the leg.
  • The disks are partially made of water. If in a dehydration state the disks shrink in size, narrowing the spaces for the nerves as they come out of the spine. Lack of intervertebral space can result in the impingement of one of the nerves causing or contributing to pain.
  • A hydrated disk is bigger bringing more space into the spinal column – in some cases just by drinking more water a patient can dramatically reduce their pain symptoms!
  • Every system of the body relies on water, from the digestive system to the tendons & ligaments to the health & function of the brain.

Tips for water optimisation:

  • Drink a bare minimum in water of your bodyweight in kg x 0.033 or 6 to 8 pints or 3L a day.
  • Drink filtered water as much as you possibly can over bottled water to help reduce plastic waste.
  • Not all filtered water is created equal! A recommended water filter is at the bottom of this article.
  • Take the supplement L-Glutamine – this can help water transfer into the cells increasing hydration levels.
  • Drink bottled water where filtered is not possible as the purity is much higher then tap water & you avoid any added chemicals such as chlorine to keep the water sterilized. Too much chlorinated water can have the adverse affect of harming all of the useful bacteria in the digestive system.
